As a gift I have promised that we will write a book on his life. He and I have spent many hours together recalling his past. I found his career as a paratrooper in WW2, Java and Palestine very interesting. During this time he had a very close fighting friend called Bunny Austin (named after the famous tennis player at the time.) When they finished their airborne career they drifted apart never to talk again. Bunny Austin saved my father life in Java after he had been shot in the stomach. I would dearly like to find out what happened to Bunny. I am not even sure if he is still alive. What I do know is that he went to run a rubber plantation in Malaya after the war (1948).I have been searching for ages now on the internet to no avail. Bunny reached the rank of corporal. He was part of the 22nd Independent Airborne Division's 5th Brigade. He was seconded to 3rd The Own Kings Hussars in Palestine. When in Java he sent a letter to my grandmother advising her that her son had been wounded but was okay. In the letter he gave his rank then as Cpl.Philip.Austin 14422605. There is a possibility that he made his way to Australia or New Zealand, but that is just a guess. Who knows where he really went???
I seem to have come up against a brick wall here. Their is some kind of secrecy
law in the UK that makes it almost impossible for me to get access to such
critical information. I have run out of ideas on how to track down the illusive
Bunny Austin. I have visited almost every website there is looking for lost
friends and soldier buddies and many other sites all over the world. So as a
last resort I am turning to you for help and advise.Would you be able to guide
me in the right direction to try and locate Bunny for my dad. Whats your name =Alex Blackburn Date=24 feb 2005 Your E-Mail=alex@mp5k.fsnet.co.uk Your Location=UK How did you find our website=Just word of mouth What unit are you from=Ex Military message=G'Day, Can I ask you a question please, and hopefully get an answer. SAS wings, the ones embroidered on the green twill/denim for wear on shirts and combat jackets. Can someone give me a wingtip to wingtip measurement. A truly sad question I know. I have seen pics of them but have no context for size. Added to which, I am putting together a book at the moment. Must be getting old, I've learned to write. the books working title is: Airborne Elite: International Airborne and Special Forces Insignia. This is to show current wings, explain what it takes to earn them and to give a brief description of the units that wear the wings. I also want to include a couple of former nations; Rhodesia being one. That is my reason for starting to gently ask about wings. If there is anyone in the UK who has his original wings I would if possible like to photograph them some time, pretty please and a beer(or two).
Any help welcome, Thanks.
